Self Portrait 1988, John Alberts, Bio, Artist's Statement, CVARTIST’S STATEMENT (PDF)

Back in art school, a much admired senior wandered through the second year painting studio and, stopping in front of my work, was heard to mutter “this guy will do ok if he just follows his nose”.  I was never quite sure what he meant, and nearly forty years on still don’t know.  Nevertheless I’ve always tried to follow his advice.

My work is a combination of willfully misunderstood influences (some obvious and others obscure, mostly from reproductions and though much beloved, too numerous to list) and unexpected objects glimpsed in passing.  Shapes and voids that seem to (for lack of a better word) “present” themselves.  If these glimpses share anything in common it’s a peculiar, heightened sense of volume in both object and space, usually picked out by a low, raking light.  In these surprised moments I often experience a pleasant, physical confusion of scale, mixing the toy-like with the monumental.  Later, in the studio, whether I’m working with still-life objects or landscape sketches, my approach is much the same, and primarily directed by those somatic sensations.

There are many times when I wonder at my fascination with this questionable but engaging puzzle;  how by smearing colored paste on a flat surface can one contrive to re-present  the odd and occasionally epiphanic sense of being and seeing in a corporeal world.
